Sectional Nominee for International Relation 2023

Secretariat for International Relations

SLAAS Secretariat for International Relations (SIR) is the newly established SLAAS sectorial committee in line with the vision articulated by the General President at the 2023 SLAAS induction ceremony. SIR has formulated an action plan to work out and strengthen the international relationships covering three majors key areas of actions as listed below.

Key Action Areas for SLAAS-SIR;

  • Scaling up and Strengthening SLAAS International Networks.
  • Working with Sri Lankan Diaspora & Migrant Communities to promote SLAAS and enhance its programmes through collaboration for greater impact.
  • Exploring and working out other possible international endeavors with mutual interests.

In order to achieve these objectives Committee at SIR has been formed through the SLAAS council approval consisting of following members;

Secretary - International Relations at SLAAS
Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera

Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera currently acts as the founder dean of the Faculty of Computing while holding the Chair Professor of Computer Science at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Prof. Jayaweera has received his B.Sc. honors degree in Computer Science from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1995. Mr. Jayaweera completed his Ph.L. and Ph.D. degrees at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV), Stockholm University, Sweden in 2002 and in 2004 respectively. He is a Common-wealth Academic Fellow who he has also completed three postdoctoral research as-signments at the University of Reading, UK, University of Namur, Belgium and Stockholm University, Sweden. Prasad M. Jayaweera was the former Head and the Professor of Computer Science at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Dr. Thilina Wanigasekera

Experienced Doctor with a demonstrated history of working in the medical practice industry. Skilled in Research, Clinical Research, Customer Service, Medical Education, and Strategic Planning. Strong healthcare services professional with a Master's Degree focused in Clinical Genetics from Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. Master of Public Administration, University of Colombo. Masters of Medical Administration, Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, PGD in Diplomacy and World affairs, University of Colombo.

Dr. Buddhika Aruggoda

Dr. (Mrs.) AGB Aruggoda, a distinguished Senior Lecturer Grade I specializing in plant protection and biotechnology. With an impressive academic background, including a BSc in Agriculture with Honors from Peradeniya and a PhD from SCAU, Dr. Aruggoda is at the forefront of innovative research.

Dr. Uthpala Premarathna

Dr. Uthpala S Premarathne obtained her B.Tech(Hons) degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering with a First class division Honors in July 2008 from the NIT Warangal, India. After finishing her undergraduate studies in 2008, she was recruited as a telecommunication engineer affiliated to Sri Lanka Telecom. She completed her MSc in Telecommunication Egineering from University of Moratuwa in 2011. She was awarded an RMIT PhD Scholarship in 2012 to pursue doctoral studies at the School of Computer Science and IT in RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. She completed her PhD in May 2018. Since January 2019, she has been working in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a Senior Lecturer (Grade II).

Dr. Rinukshi Wimalasekara, a renowned Senior Lecturer specializing in Molecular Plant Physiology and Signal Transduction. Dr. Wimalasekara holds a B.Sc. degree from the prestigious University of Peradeniya, as well as an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Hannover, Germany.

Activities Enacted by SIR

  • SLAAS Membership promotion and extensions to foreign/migrant communities
  • Identification and Collaborations with foreign counter parties relevant respective SLAAS sections through the experts contact repository on Global Digital Platform of Nation Science Foundation of Sri Lanka.
  • Ground work to get establish joint operational Units with other similar associations/societies in other Countries and Regions.
  • Promotion of foreign scholarships and academic fellowship programs among SLAAS membership and other Sri Lankans.

The international arm of the SLAAS has joined forces with the British Council and the National Science Foundation with a view to harnessing UK-trained Sri Lankan scientists, academics and professionals (SAPs) at home and in the UK in order to address some key national issues in partnership with British scientists under the theme “Transdisciplinary Approach for Sustainable Development”.
